Local economic activity as measured in terms of taxable retail sales has grown from $109 million in 2009 to $155 million in 2012. Median family income is $76,241 for 2010. Assessed value of taxable real estate for 2012 is $2.8 billion.

Employment

The primary employment sectors in King George County are federal civilian government, services, trade and manufacturing. The major employer is the Naval Support Facility Dahlgren (NSF-Dahlgren), home of the Naval Surface Warfare Center and seven other major commands. Because of NSF-Dahlgren, over 70 high tech and software engineering firms have located or expanded into the county. As of March 2012, the total government labor force within the county stood at 5,130, with an unemployment rate of 6.7%. Total employment (civilian, military and contractor) is in excess of 7,000.
