Marriage Licenses

A couple seeking marriage in Virginia must obtain a marriage license. There are no residency requirements to obtain a marriage license in Virginia. A couple may go to any Circuit Court in Virginia to obtain this license. Once the license is issued, there is no waiting period, and no blood test is required. The marriage license is valid for 60 calendar days, and the marriage must take place in Virginia.

The Clerk's office processes marriage licenses between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. Both parties must be present with a current, valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport, etc.). The license is good for 60 days from the date of issue and must be returned to the issuing office within five business days of the date of the ceremony. The fee is $30.00 by cash, check or money order. If paid by credit card, a convenience fee of $2.00 is charged.
