School Bus Safety

Back to school road safety

The motoring public shares the responsibility of keeping school children safe. The following is a reminder and reference guide of important safety laws and practices when driving near schools and school buses.

General Laws & Safety Practices

  • Always be alert and aware of your surroundings while driving
  • Always stop when following a bus with flashing lights
  • Remain stopped until the roadway is clear and the flashing lights are no longer lit

When to stop for a bus...

Vehicles traveling in both directions must stop

Vehicles traveling in both directions must stop

NOTE You may also pass a stopped school bus if a law enforcement officer or uniformed school crossing guard directs you to do so.

Multi-Lane Roadway

Vehicles traveling in both directions must stop

Divided Roadway

With dirt, grass or barrier median, vehicles behind the bus must stop, and vehicles traveling in the opposite direction must use caution.

Remember

  • When in doubt, stop! It is better to be safe than sorry.
  • ️Obey school zone speed limits. Signs will flash when active.
  • Passing buses or speeding in a school zone can lead to reckless driving charges, a misdemeanor

Failure to stop for a school bus is not only dangerous, but it is also illegal and carries significant penalties.

Please pay close attention to the road and stay alert for school buses.
